The Kuka Company was first established in 1898 in Augsburg by Johann Josef Keller and Jakob Knappich. It initially focused on interior and urban lighting. But soon the company branched out into other areas (welding tools and equipment, large containers) and in 1966 the company became the market leader in European municipal vehicles. In 1973 the company developed its first industrial robot, called FAMULUS.
